City of Mishawaka’s ‘City over Party, People over Politics’ prioritizes unity over partisanship

In today’s divisive political climate, communities can struggle to find common ground on critical issues such as infrastructure, education, and public safety. The City of Mishawaka takes a distinct approach prioritizing public service and community welfare above partisan politics. This commitment is deeply rooted in its ethos: “City over Party, People over Politics.”
“Our approach to governance is rooted in the principle of ‘City over Party, People over Politics,’” said Matthew Lentsch, executive director of development and governmental affairs for the City of Mishawaka. “It is this guiding ethos that shapes our decisions, actions, and policies every day. We believe that our local government exists to serve the people of Mishawaka, not to advance partisan agendas. Our commitment to community welfare, public safety and quality services is unwavering, regardless of political affiliation.”
At the heart of the city’s efforts is a consistent focus on practical solutions designed to benefit all residents. This prioritization shapes every level of governance to ensure decisions are driven by community needs rather than political expediency.
“From improving infrastructure and public safety to investing in community programs and economic development, our leadership prioritizes the needs of the community above all else,” Lentsch said. “Across all departments — from the Mayor’s Office to Mishawaka Utilities to the Mishawaka Common Council, Mishawaka City Clerk and beyond — there is a common understanding that success is best achieved when we work together.”
The City of Mishawaka’s commitment to non-partisan leadership is evident in its focus on tangible results. In a move approved by the city council, the recent transition to 12-hour shifts and substantial salary increases have positioned the Mishawaka Police Department among the highest-paid officers in Indiana. This collaborative spirit extends to engaging with community organizations, local businesses and residents to develop inclusive and forward-thinking solutions.
“Whether it is enhancing our public safety through innovative technology, investing in green infrastructure, or promoting affordable housing, our efforts are guided solely by what’s best for our citizens,” Lentsch said. “By prioritizing practical outcomes over political point-scoring, we ensure that our local government remains a trusted partner in community development.”
The City of Mishawaka maintains high unanimous vote rates. While the mayor represents the Republican party and the City Council reflects a Democrat majority, council meetings retain a shared outlook on the well-being of its residents. The City of Mishawaka also aims to lend an ear to concerns of perceived partisan bias.
“Our commitment to ‘City over Party, People over Politics’ has a lasting impact on every aspect of life in Mishawaka,” Lentsch said. “It is reflected in the way we manage public funds responsibly, in our dedication to ensuring that every citizen is heard, and in our constant drive to deliver high-quality services that enhance our community. This approach has enabled us to build a legacy of service that inspires confidence and fosters unity among residents, businesses and community leaders.”
Looking to the future, the City of Mishawaka remains dedicated to collaboration, transparent governance and innovative solutions. Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood will further outline the city’s progress and future vision during his annual State of the City address at 6 pm. on April 14 in the Council Chambers.
“We invite all residents and stakeholders to join us on this journey, where together we work to build a city that stands as a beacon of excellence and unity,” Lentsch said.
