Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli has entered the NCAA transfer portal, seeking to continue his collegiate football career at another program.
Angeli served as the backup to Riley Leonard during the Fighting Irish’s run to the 2024 national championship game and was part of a three-man competition this spring alongside CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey for the starting job.
In three seasons with Notre Dame, Angeli appeared in 20 games, completing 58 of 80 passes for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. He led a key scoring drive in the 2024 Orange Bowl semifinal against Penn State and started in the 2023 Sun Bowl, throwing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Oregon State.
His decision to enter the portal comes following the Blue-Gold spring game, where Carr and Minchey turned in strong performances. Head coach Marcus Freeman previously stated his intent to narrow the quarterback competition to two players heading into the fall.
As a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining, Angeli, a native of Westfield, New Jersey, is expected to draw interest from programs seeking an experienced signal-caller. Potential landing spots may include Tennessee, Minnesota, Purdue, and Tulane.
Notre Dame opens the 2025 season on Sunday, August 30, in Miami against the Miami Hurricanes.
