The South Bend Community School Corporation recently hosted a special visit from the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Dr. Amy Loyd to showcase its pioneering Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
The visit, co-hosted with U.S. Policy Advisor Catherine McConnell, took place on Wednesday, September 5, 2024, offering an opportunity for the district to highlight the innovative initiatives driven by federal Perkins Innovation and Modernization (PIM) grant funding and reaffirm its commitment to providing students with impactful, career-focused learning experiences.
"We are thrilled to have had the chance to showcase our vibrant Career and Technical Education programs and students to U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Dr. Amy Loyd," said Dr. Todd Cummings, superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation. "This truly reflects the dedication of our educators, students, and industry partners in equipping our students for successful careers."
The visit started at Riley High School’s Engineering & Computer Science Magnet, where Dr. Loyd received an overview of the school's PLTW Aerospace Engineering program and the award-winning Broadcast Media and Film Production CTE program. Instructor Tim Richardson’s media program's success was evident through the students' proud presentation of their work, which showcased the state-of-the-art ‘newscast’ production studio and the student-run radio station WWTL 91.7 FM. Riley alumni Blake Wesley, an NBA San Antonio Spurs player and CTE program graduate, was also discussed due to the dual credit media program’s impact on his development.
In addition to the media program, Dr. Loyd engaged in a tour of the Logistics & Supply Chain program with partner Chartwells food services, guided by ACCESS Workforce Readiness Coordinator Tiffany Reddick. "Our integration with local industries and emphasis on work-based learning equips our students with valuable skills and practical knowledge, setting them up for success in the workforce," said Assistant Superintendent of Workforce Readiness Chad Addie.
The visit continued at Washington High School’s Medical Magnet, led by the medical magnet coordinator Theresa Godette-Mgwaba. Dr. Loyd gained valuable insights into the opportunities for students in Indiana's state-leading model healthcare preparation programs. Community partners from Beacon Health Systems, Indiana National Guard, Legacy Medical Academy, South Bend Regional Chamber, and Indiana University South Bend joined students in sharing the impact of aligned, industry-informed health science pathways.
"Our Medical Magnet Program plays a pivotal role in providing students with hands-on training, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the demands of the healthcare industry. Expanded district and federal investments will continue to propel South Bend to the forefront as a national model for Career and Technical Education," said Addie.
The visit concluded with a tour of the district’s CTE Aviation Flight & Operations program at the South Bend International Airport. Instructor Tom Savchick and students discussed the program’s growth with partners from the airport, STAY Indiana, and the Office of Senator Todd Young. This year, students will build an entire airplane as part of the dual credit program, which they will then be able to fly upon completion.
"Having the chance to showcase our outstanding Career and Technical Education programs to U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Secretary Dr. Amy Loyd was truly an honor," said Cummings. "This visit highlighted the significant impact of federal assistance on our community and emphasized our dedicated efforts to provide innovative education for our students."
Dr. Loyd's visit emphasized South Bend Community School Corporation's commitment to offering students outstanding CTE opportunities. As a recognized leader in the state, South Bend Schools continue to set a high standard in education, focusing on preparing students for success in college and the workforce.
