With crisp air and twinkling lights, Northwest Indiana (NWI) transforms into a winter wonderland, perfect for a cozy “one-tank trip.”
From the scenic beauty of the Dunes to cozy indoor spots and festive holiday attractions, there's plenty to explore in NWI between November and January.
To help plan an easy visit, the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority (CVA) provides travelers with recommendations and tips for the perfect winter getaway.
“The South Shore has a variety of different activities for all seasons including the winter months,” said Heather Becerra, South Shore CVA chief marketing officer.
NWI boasts breathtaking hiking trails that are perfect for winter walks.
“NWI has multiple winter outdoor activities such as snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at the Indiana Dunes National Park,” said Becerra. “The trails are also open in the winter which allows hikers to explore the beautiful scenery as they are in the winter months including the unique ecosystems and wildlife.”
However, it’s not all about the outdoors; the Region shines with holiday lights, vibrant arts venues, and cozy spots to unwind.
Indoor attractions, such as breweries, wineries, and casinos, offer warmth and fun for visitors looking to escape the cold.
“With over 20 breweries, nine wineries, and several distilleries across NWI, visitors have a variety of unique spots to explore,” said Becerra. “The new Journeyman Distillery in Valparaiso, for example, offers both food and beverage options year-round.”
Another must-see for NWI visitors are the entertainment venues throughout the area.
“There are so many venues in the area,” said Becerra. “Locations like Hard Rock Live at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, The Venue at Horseshoe Casino Hammond, or the Hobart Art Theater offer top-name entertainment, comedians, tribute bands and up-and-coming local talent.”
For travelers interested in celebrating the season, NWI has multiple one-of-a-kind holiday events and experiences.
“A Christmas Story” Comes Home in Hammond is a joyful celebration of the holiday classic, offering nostalgic scenes and family-friendly activities.
Additionally, the South Shore CVA notes several outdoor winter activities for visitors to take part in.
“Harvest Tyme Family Farm lets guests walk through amazing light displays while listening to Christmas music and drinking hot chocolate,” said Becerra. “Fair Oaks Farms has its Forest of Lights event complete with lighted tractors and changing holiday scenes.”
To make planning a day trip easier, the South Shore CVA’s Along the South Shore website is frequently updated with trip suggestions, lodging recommendations, and upcoming events.
