Notre Dame DBs and Special Teams Embrace Competition, Growth During Spring Practice

Notre Dame’s defensive backs and special teams’ units are embracing competition and cohesion as spring practice reaches its midway point.

Under the leadership of defensive backs coach Mike Mickens and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi, several returning contributors and fresh faces are stepping into bigger roles. Players like Tae Johnson and Christian Gray are setting the tone in the secondary, while young safeties Ben Minich and Luke Talich continue to impress after standout special team’s performances last season.

“This group is learning how to practice at a high standard every day,” Mickens said. “We’re focusing more on zone coverage to elevate our understanding of the game.”

Special teams also remain a strength for the Irish. Transfer kicker Noah Burnette is already turning heads with his consistency, while punter James Rendell is settling in after a whirlwind freshman year that included playing in front of over 100,000 fans.

“We’re excited about the athletes we have in the return game,” Biagi said. “Guys like Jadarian Price, Jordan Faison, Will Pauling and Jaden Greathouse all have the ability to make explosive plays.”

Sophomore safety Adon Shuler, now fully healthy, said he feels more natural at the position and is eager to contribute. Fellow sophomore Kennedy Urlacher said he’s “a lot more calm and ready” than last spring, crediting coaching and special teams reps for his development.

As the Blue-Gold Game approaches next week (Saturday, April 12th), Notre Dame fans can expect an intense competition across the defensive backfield — with plenty of local pride riding on who steps up next.
