Heidi Daren, a special education teacher at Riley High School, has been named the 2025 Teacher of the Year for the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC). Cecilia Stanton-Verduzco, a Spanish teacher at Adams High School, is the district's runner-up.
“I love teaching and I love my students, so I’m just so thankful to be here and representing Riley and all of our kids,” Daren said during the award ceremony held on Thursday evening at Adams High School.
The event recognized 28 nominees selected by their peers, with Daren chosen as the district's top educator by a panel of evaluators and other retired and current teachers. As the SBCSC Teacher of the Year, Daren will receive a $2,500 Professional Growth Grant from the South Bend Education Foundation and will serve as a candidate for the 2024-25 Indiana Teacher of the Year.
Daren has over a decade of experience and is a National Board Certified Teacher with a master’s degree in curriculum and instructional design. She is widely acknowledged for her innovative approach to education and her commitment to fostering inclusive environments for students with diverse learning needs.
“Daren is a dedicated and passionate teacher who truly deserves this recognition,” said Mansour Eid, acting superintendent of South Bend Community School Corporation. “We congratulate all the nominees and winners of this year's Teacher of the Year awards for their commitment to education.”
Daren has made significant contributions to her school, founding the Best Buddies International chapter and introducing a therapy dog named Milo to support students' emotional and social growth. Her efforts have increased the participation of students with disabilities in general education classes and extracurricular activities.
This year marks the 46th anniversary of the SBCSC Teacher of the Year program, which has honored 1,393 outstanding educators for their service and dedication over the past four decades.
