Girls Wrestling continues to fight onward

High school Girls Wrestling in the Region is an up-and-coming sport that started in 2017, but the craze for it started in the Region last year.

Like Boys Wrestling, there are rankings and weight classes, so the girls compete against girls their size. At the state tournament level, they compete at this same type of level but are divided out.

Teams like Illiana Christian High School (ICHS), Valparaiso High School, Crown Point High School (CPHS), Merrillville High School (MHS), Lake Central High School, Hobart High School, and Portage High School had some ladies compete at a Frosh-Soph competition for the first time in February 2021.

Ladies from Lake Central, Griffith Wrestling Club, Valparaiso, Crown Point, Illiana Christian, and many more competed against women across Northwest Indiana and in southern Indiana.

In November of 2022, the ICHS Girls Wrestling team finished sixth out of the 24 teams at East Noble High School, with second, third, fourth, and sixth place rankings.

In December of 2022, MHS’s emerging Girls Wrestling team took third in the Sarah Hildebrandt Invitational.

Also, earlier this year, two women from MHS, Sophomore Joy Cantu and Senior Amiria Galburth placed in the top eight at the girls' wrestling state tournament.

Lastly, CPHS’s very own Rianne Murphy was selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week in early February as she ranked No.7 at 100lbs in the National Girls High School rankings.

Along with the high school Girls Wrestling teams competing alongside women in their weight classes, some programs in our area will help get their foot in the door at a young age.

Places like Indiana Girls Wrestling that have their own specific classes help ladies with clinics and programs, and there are also some wrestling clubs.

Teams and clubs like these are important all across the Region, and Girls Wrestling will continue to grow over time as a sport in Northwest Indiana.
