This month, AJ Miller celebrated his 20th year at UnitedHealthcare, where he started working after college and grew into his current role of vice president of small businesses for Illinois and Missouri. When Miller started his career, his father, who worked as an insurance broker, encouraged him to consider a position in the healthcare industry and put him in touch with UnitedHealthcare.
Through a variety of roles over the years, Miller learned about the various health plans and well-being programs offered by UnitedHealthcare. One day, he was struck with the inspiration to take full advantage of those programs on a personal level to improve his health and overall quality of life.
“I realized I was talking about health and wellness being a priority for individuals, but I wasn't necessarily living that lifestyle myself,” Miller said. “From that day forward, I decided I was going to use some of the tools and resources that UnitedHealthcare offered and find out firsthand how they are beneficial. Instead of talking about it, I wanted to do it.”
With this new determination, Miller plugged into a variety of UnitedHealthcare resources, including programs focused on adopting healthier daily habits. One of the solutions suggested healthy activities, enabling Miller to set small goals and track his progress. Another program, Real Appeal, encouraged him to move more and track what he ate, helping him learn how different foods impacted how he felt. Through these UnitedHealthcare programs and other similar initiatives, millions of consumers have access to this type of support.
“That process changed my life and I found how much I appreciated having a healthy and active lifestyle,” Miller said. “Now, I can share from personal experience and say, ‘Here's how it benefited me. These are the resources that I utilized. Here's how I did it.’”
“It started slowly and progressed,” Miller said. “It has been the most fantastic journey I've ever been on, and I hope that others will have the same experience with UnitedHealthcare. If they have a fraction of the success that I've had, they will find it rewarding.”
In addition to the satisfaction with the lifestyle changes UnitedHealthcare helped him achieve, Miller said it has been an honor to see colleagues thrive. Every year, some of the top performing UnitedHealthcare employees go to Pinnacle, which is a trip rewarding team members for their hard work, growth, and success. A member of Miller’s team ranked as the top salesperson in the nation in 2023 and will attend the Pinnacle trip later this year.
“I enjoy watching my team members go to Pinnacle, which is that crowning achievement. I love seeing all my colleagues grow, succeed, and build passion for helping people live healthier lives,” Miller said.
Seeing others succeed is a part of life he enjoys outside of the office as well, especially when he watches his oldest son play volleyball and his youngest son play football. Miller often spends his free time playing golf and recently returned from the great courses in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Closer to home, he enjoys walking the golf courses at Muirfield Village in Columbus, Ohio.
