Families explore opportunities at South Bend Schools’ annual showcase

The Brown Administration Building gymnasium in South Bend was filled with the energy of families, students, and community members gathered for the South Bend Community School Corporation’s (SBCSC) annual Showcase of Schools on Wednesday, October 30. The event offered attendees a closer look at each SBCSC school — Pre-K through middle school — to help them decide which school is the perfect fit for their student and family.

Attendees were welcomed by representatives from showcased SBCSC schools, each school featuring its own decorative booth. Teachers, principals, and district administrators were available to answer questions and provide insight into their school.

Andrew Goetz, communications director for SBCSC, emphasized the showcase’s role in providing a cumulative look at what the district has to offer.

“Events like the Showcase of Schools offer families a chance to see, all under one roof, the wide range of opportunities available for students from Pre-K through middle school,” Goetz said. “It’s a valuable time for families to meet administrators, teachers, and principals, and to explore which school would be the best fit based on each school’s unique strengths.”

The showcase also highlighted SBCSC’s recent accomplishments, which include reaching the district’s highest graduation rates in over a decade, improved literacy scores across grade levels, commitment to safe and secure learning environments, inclusive athletic programs for all grades, and students graduating and gaining acceptance to some of the nation’s top colleges and universities.

"We’re extremely proud of our graduation rates and improved literacy scores,” Goetz said. “We’re also excited to showcase our amazing extracurricular programs. We offer athletic opportunities starting in elementary school for students interested in sports or simply staying active.”

Reflecting on the broader impact of its programs, Goetz expressed pride in students as they go beyond SBCSC.

“Our graduating students go on to have great success stories of their own — going to some of our nation's top colleges and universities, becoming a parent, starring on Broadway, or becoming a local judge,” Goetz said. “Our students are so successful. We're proud of the graduates of South Bend schools.”

Though the SBCSC high schools were not showcased during the Showcase of Schools, they were not forgotten. Each high school will host an Eighth-Grade Information Night in November.

"I encourage families with eighth graders deciding where they're going to pursue their high school interests to come out to those nights,” Goetz said. “Students and families can tour each high school, meet the principals, explore the hallways, and learn why each school could be a great fit for them.”
