Elkhart Community Schools Works With Families, Community To Recover From Storm

Elkhart Community Schools Works With Families, Community To Recover From Storm

Elkhart families and schools were impacted by the tornado and storm damage that occurred earlier this week. Four Elkhart Community Schools buildings sustained structural and electrical damage, as well as damage to the sidewalks and surrounding properties.

“We are devastated by the destruction that many of our families faced,” says ECS Superintendent Dr. Larry Huff. “We are working with government officials to assess the needs of our families and discover ways the district can offer support. We are also so grateful to our Elkhart Schools Facilities and Technologies Teams. Their tireless efforts have helped to restore power and repair damage. This means Elkhart Schools will be ready to welcome students for our Jumpstart program, scheduled to begin this coming Monday (July 22nd).”

In order to support ECS families, social workers are also ready to work with those impacted by the storm and to assess how the district may be able to help during this time.

Additional food service sites at Monger Elementary and Hawthorne Early Learning Center are opening tomorrow through August 2nd. Free meals will be available for students 18 and under. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m.–8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11a.m.–12 p.m.

“Our thoughts continue to be with those whose homes were affected by the storms. Elkhart Schools stands with the community, and through the hard work and dedication of our team members and others, we will come out the other side of this difficult time,” says Huff.
