Dr. George Mighion has long considered Michiana home. Born in the suburbs of Detroit, he moved to Indiana at age 10 and later graduated from Marian High School in Mishawaka in 1988. Though he left the area to pursue undergraduate studies, his ties to the region have always remained strong.
After earning his degree from Indiana University Bloomington, Dr. Mighion continued his education at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, graduating in 1996. Just two years later, he returned to his hometown to open his own practice: George A. Mighion, DDS, PC. More than 25 years later, he still serves the community as a dedicated general dentist.
Each day, Dr. Mighion focuses on more than just treating teeth—he prioritizes his patients’ overall oral health and well-being. His work ranges from cosmetic improvements to addressing deeper health concerns.
“Cosmetically, I’m replacing missing teeth and sometimes straightening them,” he said. “We want to give people the smile they’ve always wanted. My favorite thing to do right now is implants. I also have a passion for helping people who suffer from sleep-related breathing disorders.”
While dentistry wasn’t always his intended path, Dr. Mighion’s interest in medicine began in seventh grade after taking a human anatomy class. Originally considering a career as a medical doctor, he later sought guidance from his uncle and his father’s best friend—both dentists—who helped him realize that dentistry could be a powerful way to make a difference in people’s lives.
“Studies have shown the first thing people notice is someone’s smile,” he said. “A beautiful smile can boost self-confidence. And if you’re missing enough teeth, it can impact how you chew and digest food. I don’t just treat teeth—it’s about supporting a person’s overall health.”
Dr. Mighion’s care extends beyond his practice. He participates in the Donated Dental Services program, a national initiative providing free dental care to individuals who cannot afford it. His commitment to helping others is rooted not only in his professional life but also in his deep connection to the community.
Family plays a central role in Dr. Mighion’s life. After the loss of his father at age 9, his family moved to South Bend. Sunday dinners with his mother, who has since passed, and siblings became treasured traditions—ones he now carries forward in his own family life.
Outside the office, Dr. Mighion is an avid scuba diver, a passion he’s pursued for nearly 35 years, often traveling to warm destinations like the Caribbean. He also enjoys racquetball, reading fiction and history, and spending time at his family’s lakeside cottage.
“I’ve loved the water for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Playing racquetball twice a week and reading keeps me balanced. It used to be tough to find time for everything, but it’s gotten easier now that I’m more seasoned—back then, I was a bit of a workaholic.”
With roots in both Indiana and Michigan, Dr. Mighion values the strong sense of community and opportunity the region offers.
“I love that we’re near the Great Lakes and that our friends are close by,” he said. “This place gave us a wonderful environment to raise our children. I never stop learning, and there’s always something to discover.”
