GreatNews.Life Student Voices: Marian High School enjoys winter wonderland

What's recently happened?

Marian HIgh School had a 20-minute retreat in the BCAC gym during homeroom on January 23. Students went to the gym for music and worship.

Taylor Geiger, a sophomore at Marian, has gone to all of the 20-minute retreats Marian has held this year.

”I love getting extra opportunities to spend time with God and worship,” Geiger said.

These retreats are loved by many students as they are great times to worship together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

January 27 to January 31 was Catholic Schools Week. There were dress-down days for the whole week. Monday was Pajama Day, Tuesday was Jerseys, Wednesday was Grey Out, Thursday was Sunday Best because it was a mass day, and Friday was Holidays. The classes represented different holidays. The seniors had Christmas, The juniors had the 4th of July, the sophomores had St. Patrick's Day and the Freshmen had Valentines Day.

On Wednesday, there was a diaper drive for the Women's Care Center. Students brought diapers or a minimum donation of $1. On Friday, there was a pep rally and a basketball game against Washington. JV tipped at 6 p.m. Go Knights!

What’s coming up?

At Marian, there is a lot of excitement for what is to come. The annual Midwinter dance is happening on February 15, and this year's theme is Winter Wonderland. Tickets went on sale the week of January 27. Permission slips to bring outside school guests are now available to fill out.

“It’s a fun time to hang out with my friends and dress up,” Giglio said.

Come spend time with friends on the dance floor and enjoy the beautiful Winter Wonderland.

Additionally, mark the calendar for February 17 – Presidents Day – because there are no classes. Cozy up and sleep in or come help the blue team art captains paint a mural from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Basketball games are happening left and right. Make sure to go support the Girls and Boys Basketball teams.

Staff spotlight:

Marian has a new staff member, Science Teacher Sara Cole, who started working for the school in 2024.

“My favorite part about teaching at Marian is being a part of this community, especially because it is a Catholic community,” Cole said.

She loves helping out in all ways. She helped out at the 20-minute worship retreat Marian held during homeroom. She loves being a part of the school’s amazing community.

Cole is also the leader of Marian's brand-new club, Agriculture Club. The Agriculture Club has promising plans for its future, and Cole has goals she's determined to accomplish.

“I'd like to visit more farms and maybe even attend some other events as well. There are some events that the local Soil and Water Conservation District and Purdue Extension put on, and I'd love to help students attend,” Cole said.

Cole loves to work with plants and help students grow their interest in them.
