Mishawaka High School, a cornerstone of the community for generations, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special gala event and auction hosted by the Mishawaka Education Foundation. The event, which included a silent auction and tours of the historic school, honored the institution’s legacy and highlighted its continued impact on students, alumni, and the community.
Founded in 1874 and housed in its current building since 1924, Mishawaka High School has become known as one of Indiana’s most beautiful schools, often referred to as an “architectural masterpiece” and a “civic cathedral.” To celebrate this milestone, Mayor Dave Wood delivered a statement officially declaring October 26, 2024, as “100 Years of Excellence Day” in the City of Mishawaka.
“This building is the heart and soul of our community,” Wood said.
At the celebration, Jane Wright, executive director of the Mishawaka Education Foundation, expressed the foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting Mishawaka High School’s students and staff.
“Our goal is always to give back to our staff and students in any way we can,” Wright said. “The needs are great, especially with decreased funding for public schools, so we want to ensure Mishawaka students have everything they need to succeed.”
Wright also noted the importance of community events like the gala, which help raise funds and strengthen support for the school’s future.
Wood outlined Mishawaka High School’s rich history, dating back to its origins in 1869 and its formal establishment as Mishawaka High School in 1874. Over the years, more than 30,000 students have graduated from the school, many of whom have made significant contributions to their professions, communities, and families. The proclamation also recognized the influence of Mishawaka High School’s educators and staff, who, for 150 years, have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the arts, fostering a legacy of academic and extracurricular achievement.
Attendees had the unique opportunity to tour Mishawaka High School’s historic building, including a visit to “The Cave,” the state’s oldest active gym, which has witnessed countless sports victories and memories. Alumni shared their own reflections, including a special guest: 100-year-old alumnus Van Gates, of Gates Chevrolet, who graduated from Mishawaka High School decades ago. Gates nostalgically reminded the crowd of the generations that have passed through Mishawaka High School’s storied halls.
Leonard Nichols, a Mishawaka High School alumni, reflected on his family’s deep-rooted connection to the school, sharing that all five of his siblings proudly graduated from Mishawaka High School. For Nichols, the school is not just a landmark, but a family tradition that spans generations, making this celebration even more personal to him.
Throughout its century-long history, Mishawaka High School has remained a vital part of the community. Known for producing well-rounded students who excel in academics, arts, and athletics, Mishawaka High School has won numerous championships, including state titles in volleyball, wrestling, and cross country, as well as individual state titles in track and field, swimming, and other sports. The school’s strong programs in media arts, culinary arts, and performing arts continue to evolve, ensuring that Mishawaka students are well-prepared for the future.
The 100th anniversary of Mishawaka High School brought together generations of alumni, students, faculty, and community members in a celebration of the school’s enduring legacy. With reflections on its rich history and continued commitment to fostering student success, the event underscored the lasting impact of Mishawaka High on both individual lives and the broader community. Attendees left feeling inspired by a century of achievements and hopeful for the future of the iconic institution that has shaped so many.
