Rima Bahradine-Bell, an exceptional student at Career Academy South Bend High School, a top STEM-Certified public school in South Bend, and a distinguished representative of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor, proudly competed in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) National Youth of the Year competition during the week of September 16. Rima was selected from more than 5,400 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country as one of just five remarkable youth finalists contending for the coveted national title.
Rima's involvement with the Boys & Girls Club began at the Harrison Elementary site, where her natural leadership abilities quickly became evident. Over the years, she has grown into a dynamic young leader, making a significant impact in both the South Bend community and beyond. Although she did not claim the national title, her journey is a powerful testament to her determination, resilience, and the transformative opportunities provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs and Career Academy South Bend.

Rima’s remarkable contributions as a youth advocate have not gone unnoticed. She will continue to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs as the 2024 Indiana and Midwest Youth of the Year, attending national events, delivering speeches on behalf of her peers, and championing critical issues such as community violence prevention, youth mental health support, and increasing diversity in STEM and healthcare.
"I care deeply about investing in resources that prevent community violence and support young people’s mental health. By participating in STEM, arts, and other after-school activities, more kids and teens can build the confidence, relationships, and resilience they need to be successful in life," Rima stated, underscoring her passion for youth advocacy.
Reflecting on her experiences, Rima also highlighted the significance of empathy and understanding:
"As a young woman of color, it would be easy for me to just be angry at how inequality affects our world every day. But I’ve learned that when I take the time to talk to others about their experiences, I am in a better position to share my own with them. Forging these relationships built on empathy is how I believe we can change hearts and minds."
Throughout her journey, Rima has traveled to cities such as Indianapolis, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, meeting with influential leaders including mayors, governors, members of Congress, and even celebrities. However, for Rima, the most rewarding part of her experience has been building relationships with her fellow competitors, who share her passion for driving meaningful change.
"I believe STEM and healthcare are equally important and interconnected. Not just because I find joy in them, but because women and people of color are still underrepresented in these fields, especially in leadership positions. I’m committed to using this platform to empower others and encourage our communities to listen to young people and invest in our potential," Rima said.
